What is the general consensus about light switches? I replaced most of mine with X10 switches, but they do not match the pole to pole switch they replace, and they fall apart under repeated use. On top of that, they cannot pull the same amperage the original did.
I have a number of ceiling fan/lights where they barely turn the same number of rpms they used to. What other switches appear close to the original style that was replaced and can carry a heavier amperage?
Suggestions?

I don't believe that the X10 wall switches are really meant for fans. They really work great for incandescent lighting only. If you want to have a wall switch with a fan I would put in a wall relay type (ON/OFF only) switch. This is basically an appliance module in a wall switch and will turn the load on or off but no dimming etc

Switches from X10 are typically not really high quality ...... if you try X10 Pro or Leviton, you will be happier (I am currently using both of these after my X10 brand switches died).

What Levitron switches are you using? Are the DHC models X10 compatible?

YES, All of the DHC Leviton switches are X10 compatible (The DHC standard is simply an extension of the X10 power-line protocol spec).
For a cheapersolution, try the X10 Pro line of switches .... most of the switches that I use now are X10 Pro (They look and feel considerably higher quality, and are far less expensive than their Leviton equivelents)

You are right in the standard X-10 switches are only designed to carry incandescent loads and not very large.
I sell a lot of different brands of switches (over 30 kinds from 6-7 manufacturers). I personally like the switchlinc switches the best. I get the best reviews about them from my customers. They also have models that are 2-way to provide information back to HAL.
